Fact Sheet
New Views of Mercury
A close-up view of Mercury by the Messenger spacecraft shows details in a region of the planet that had never been seen before. The impact crater at lower right is fairly fresh, surrounded by "rays" of material blasted out by the collision. The crater is about 15 miles (25 km) in diameter. A pair of older, overlapping craters is at top right. Messenger took this picture during a close flyby of Mercury on January 14. [NASA/JHU APL/CIW]
