Fact Sheet
Glassmaker?
This satellite photo shows a circular feature in the Libyan desert that may be an impact crater that splashed bits of glass across the landscape about 29 million years ago. A 1932 expedition discovered a large concentration of the glass beads, although they were known long before that -- one of the artifacts in the tomb of King Tutankhamum include a scarab carved from a sliver of the glass. The crater is almost 20 miles in diameter. [NASA]
