Fact Sheet
Volcanoes on Venus
Ancient volcanoes dot the surface of Venus, our closest planetary neighbor. This computer-generated image, produced from data gathered by the Magellan spacecraft, shows the volcanoes Sif Mons (on the horizon at left), which is 1.2 miles (2 km) tall, and Gula Mons, which is half again as tall. Magellan observations suggest that some volcanoes on Venus could still be active. Venus is visible in our early evening sky this week as the brilliant "evening star," low in the west shortly after sunset.
