Fact Sheet
Phabulous Phobos
The cracked and battered surface of Phobos, the largest moon of Mars, is shown in exquisite detail by this image from the orbiting Mars Express, which was released last week. The parallel lines that run across the moon are deep grooves that may be cracks caused by a giant impact in its distant past. Scientists with Mars Express, a European mission, say this is one of the sharpest pictures of Phobos ever obtained. [Credit: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin (G. Neukum)]
