Fact Sheet
Parting Glance
A large volcanic depression and a small volcano highlight this image of Io, one of the moons of Jupiter. The Galileo spacecraft snapped the image during its final pass by Io late last year, and mission scientists released it last week. The oval-shaped feature at top center is a 60-mile-long depression that may have formed when the ground above an empty magma chamber collapsed. A volcano stands at the far right, with streaks of volcanic sulfur spreading out to its left. [Credit: NASA/JPL]
