Fact Sheet
First Image from Mars Odyssey
The south pole of Mars glows as a vivid blue circle in the first image from Mars Odyssey, which entered orbit around the planet on October 23. This image is from an infrared camera system that measures the planet's temperature; colder regions are coded blue while warmer regions are red and orange. Mars Odyssey will refine its orbit over the next three months by dipping lower and lower into the Martian atmosphere. It will begin its main scientific mission early next year.
