Fact Sheet
One Giant Shadow
Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong casts a long shadow as he photographs the lunar lander, Eagle, and several scientific experiments on the Moon's Sea of Tranquillity. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon. Crewmate Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin followed him to the surface a few minutes later. They strolled on the Moon for about two and a half hours, gathering lunar rocks and soil and setting up experiments to listen for moonquakes, gather particles of the solar wind, and help astronomers measure the Earth-Moon distance to within a few inches.
