Fact Sheet
Ring Nebula
The outer layers of a dying star at the center of the Ring Nebula are ejected as the star, now a white dwarf, uses up the last of its nuclear fuel. Intense ultraviolet radiation gives the rings their multicolored glow. The image was planned by the Heritage team and observed by Hubble on October 16, 1998. The Ring Nebula is approximately 2,300 light-years away in the constellation Lyra.
