Fact Sheet
Frosty Crater
Winter arrives in the southern hemisphere of Mars in a few weeks, and frost already blankets many regions of the hemisphere. White frost coats portions of the floor and rim of Lowell crater in this image from Mars Global Surveyor, which was snapped October 17. Frost layers will thicken as winter temperatures plummet. Lowell crater is about 125 miles (200 km) in diameter. [Credit: NASA/JPL/MSSS]
