Fact Sheet
Hot Eruption
A geyser of hot gas erupts from the surface of the Sun in this July 1 image from the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The exploding material, at lower left, spans about a quarter-million miles (400,000 km) -- the distance between Earth and the Moon. This image captures the Sun in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths, which are invisible to human eyes. [SOHO]
