Fact Sheet
Shattered Dreams
Sample containers aboard the Genesis spacecraft, like this one displayed before launch, probably consist of little more than splinters after the craft hit the Utah desert at almost 200 miles per hour after its parachute failed to open Wednesday morning. Genesis spent about two years collecting particles of the "solar wind." NASA secured the spacecraft and scientists will examine its sample container to see if any of its scientific results can be salvaged. [Credit: NASA/JPL]
