A black hole pulls apart a star and devours some of its hot gas in this artist's concept. The gas forms a disk before it spirals into the black hole, which distorts the view of the stars behind it. An orbiting ultraviolet satellite has detected this process in action in a distant galaxy, and has tracked it from the first big "bite" of gas through to the final phases. [NASA/JPL]
