Fact Sheet
Olympian Volcano
Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, rises from the surface of Mars in this 1978 image from Viking 1. The mountain, which is named for the mythical Mount Olympus, home of the Greek gods, covers an area as large as the state of Missouri, and the cliffs at its edge are hundreds of feet tall. The crater may be extinct or just dormant. [NASA]
