Fact Sheet
Stepping Stone
The Spirit rover was scheduled to begin its scientific mission on Tuesday by "digging in"
to this rock, named Adirondack. Spirit will strip away a bit of Adirondack's surface layers to allow its instruments to study the rock's interior. The rock is only a few feet from the rover's landing site. Adirondack is only a stepping stone for Spirit; scientists hope the rover will cover several hundred yards during its planned 90-day mission. [Credit: NASA/JPL]
