Fact Sheet
Martian Devils
A tall "dust devil" spins across the surface of Mars in this image from Mars Global Surveyor. It is the puffy white blob at the bottom of the image, with a shadow extending to its upper left. A dust devil is a whirling column of rising air that gathers dust from the surface. Dust devils are common in the deserts of the southwestern United States as well as on Mars.
